Adlerian Play Therapy through a Neurobiology Lens
The first six years of life are the most influential period of neuronal growth and the most vulnerable to maltreatment. Advancements in neuroscience provide theoretical and conceptual support for principles and practices of Adlerian play therapy (AdPT) for young children. In this online workshop, the presenter will (a) examine Adlerian play therapy through a neuroscientific lens, specifically the Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) framework pioneered by Dan Siegel (2012), (b) outline specific interventions from AdPT complimentary to neuroscience research that supports the positive growth of children, and (c) guide participants in connecting these philosophies (AdPT and IPNB) through case examples, activities, and discussion.
Learning Objectives: After successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- describe the foundational skills of Adlerian Play Therapy.
- identify and draw connections between theoretical principles of Adlerian play therapy and principles of Interpersonal Neurobiology.
- describe specific play therapy techniques that are IPNB-focused within each phase of Adlerian play therapy.

About our presenter: Dalena Dillman Taylor, PhD, LMHC, RPT-S is a tenure earning Associate Professor at the University of Central Florida in the Department of Counselor Education & School Psychology/Counselor Education Program. She earned her doctoral degree in Counseling and completed her masters degree in Counseling from the University of North Texas. Dr. Dillman Taylor’s primary research interests include: advancement of Adlerian Play Therapy field towards evidence-based practice; counseling and educational services for high need children and families; and counselor development and supervision. Dr. Dillman Taylor has been active in the areas of research, teaching, and service. Dr. Dillman Taylor has over 20 scholarly works in refereed and/or peer-reviewed dissemination outlets. Dr. Dillman Taylor is the Co-Principal Investigator of Project Harmony (90FM0078-01-00), a five-year federally supported research grant awarded by the Office of Family Assistant. Project Harmony is a randomized control trial investigating the impact of a relationship education intervention on relationship satisfaction, individual distress, parental alliance, emotion regulation, and economic stability for individuals and couples from economically disadvantaged background. Dr. Dillman Taylor is also the Director of the Center for Play Therapy Training and Research at UCF. She is a certified child-centered play therapist supervisor, a certified child parent relationship therapist supervisor, and a trained Adlerian play therapist.

NEAPT is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education specific to Play Therapy. APT Approved Provider 02-123. NEAPT maintains responsibility for the program.
