Co-Regulation in Play Therapy: Harnessing the Power of Relational Neuroscience to Improve Your Practice
Relational Neuroscience offers play therapists an important framework for understanding the brain in the context of relationships, bringing greater understanding about why play therapy works. This presentation will review current research in Relational Neuroscience and the ways in which play therapists can utilize this knowledge to confidently lean into allowing the relationship to facilitate the power of play therapy.
Learning Objectives: After successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of brain development when working with play therapy clients and how this relates to their play therapy client.
- explain how to use co-regulation as a building block to self-regulation in the play therapy room and articulate why children with a history of complex trauma need an increased amount of presence and co-regulation in play therapy.
- apply treatment interventions that focus on connection and co-regulation with play therapy clients.
- demonstrate ways to work with parents to increase their capacity for connection and co-regulation with play therapy clients and in the playroom.

About our presenters: Robin Wiley, LPC, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor has worked in a variety of settings including Residential Treatment programs as a mobile play therapist to children who had witnessed domestic violence to currently working for a local CSB and d she owns HeartSpace Counseling in Roanoke, VA. Heartspace is a group practice providing quality services to children, adolescents and their families.
Sarah Harig, LPC, Registered Play Therapist™ currently works as a counselor at Family Service of Roanoke Valley in Roanoke, VA, a providing services to children, adolescents, and families. She also serves as the VAPT Roanoke and New River Valley Chapter Co-Chair as well as Secretary of VAPT. She is an Adjunct Professor in the Counselor Education Department at Radford University.
