Play Therapy and Children with Disabilities: Going Out on a Limb
Children with disabilities represent a marginalized population who confront many obstacles in achieving optimal health and social experiences. As a result, clinical counselors hold a foundational role towards empowering children with disabilities. However, there remain significant limitations in the counseling research for serving children with disabilities. Play Therapy offers mental health professional’s beneficial strategies for empowering children with disabilities. This curriculum will highlight common barriers that children with disabilities experience and introduce theories play therapy that are beneficial when working with this population. Specific play therapy techniques will be offered to further assist clinicians when working with children with disabilities.
Learning Objectives: After successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Articulate models of play therapy practice that can be utilized when working with children with disabilities.
- Demonstrate three specific play therapy techniques that can be implemented to empower children with disabilities.
- Implement various models of play therapy for differing stages in the Disability Adaptation Process.

About our presenter: Brian L. Bethel, Ph.D., LPCC-S, LCDC III, RPT-S is a Professional Clinical Counselor-Supervisor (LPCC-S), a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC III), and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S) with specialized training in counseling children, adolescents, and families. Dr. Bethel earned his PhD In Counselor Education and Supervision from Ohio University where he also earned dual master’s degrees in Clinical Counseling and Rehabilitation Counseling. With over twenty years of clinical practice, Dr. Bethel brings a diversity of strengths to his clinical practice. As the founder and director of Interplay Counseling and Consultation Services, LLC., Dr. Bethel operates a private counseling practice and provides educational services to community organizations. He has dedicated much of his professional career to working with individuals impacted by trauma and continues as a mental health clinician for a nationally accredited Child Advocacy Center that serves children and families across southern and southeastern, Ohio.
