Lunch & Learn: Integrating Play Therapy with EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), due in part to its significant empirical support, is widely used for the treatment of all types of trauma with multiple clinical populations. However, as with all models and theories, knowledge of play therapy is needed in order to most effectively and ethically use EMDR with children. This workshop will help play therapists understand the mechanisms of EMDR (based on AIP theory) and how it integrates with play therapy. While not a substitute for EMDR basic training, play therapists will be able to better evaluate whether they could benefit from EMDR training. Therapists already trained in EMDR will learn an approach to treatment planning as well as ways to integrate play theory and technique.

Learning Objectives: After successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

    1. Identify the basic tenets of EMDR and how it is applied to play therapy.

    2. Evaluate the timing of resourcing and trauma reprocessing in play therapy treatment planning.

    3. Apply EMDR-informed concepts to play therapy techniques.
